Does your loved one still drive? Or, do you have any tips or suggestions, or your experience to share on how to stop a loved one from driving when they are no longer safe behind the wheel?
Several years ago, my mom started getting lost driving to places she’d been to many times before. Also, a friend she took regular walks with share that she noticed my mom didn’t use good judgement while crossing the street. My sisters and I sat down with my parents and explained what we noticed and expressed our concerns. My mom insisted she was a good driver. After a lengthy discussion about our reasons (most of which she couldn’t really understand) including that we didn’t want to wait for her to have an accident, we finally convinced my mom to give up her keys. Thankfully, she realized that our request was out of love for her. The next step was to get my dad on board and to drive my mom wherever she wanted to go. We are very fortunate that this often very big hurdle was somewhat uneventful for our family.
