Hello, my husband was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's earlier this year. He is 52 and I am 49. I had to leave my job to be a full-time caregiver and it has been the most challenging experience thus far. We are so young and so many programs and support groups are geared towards more the more senior population. This has made it extremely hard to connect with anyone our age who is also going through the same experience. We still have children at home and in college who need my support too. We are just in a different "season" of life and have different challenges and needs compared to older caregivers. For instance, I was recently mentioning how I had to take Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and snapchat off my husband's phone and trying to see how others handled this type of situation. Well guess what? This is not an issue for the older generations, so I was not able to gather any type of input or tips for this challenge. Trying this community forum in hopes of connecting with other younger individuals caring for someone with any type of dementia or early onset alzheimer's.

Good morning. I hope all is better for you. I pray you get the answers you need. Every state has Medicaid Waiver Programs that would help. Try looking into your state government websites.

My Name is Manny. I live in Socal for the last 30 years. I am 59. I am originally from NYC. My mom is 81 and has been diagnosed with early stages of Dementia. My Grandmother, her mom also had dementia right around the age my Mom is now. She is still in New York and I am trying to get her out here. I have challenges ahead! I want to be able to give my Mom the best care I can!

Hi, without forewarning I became caregiver to my mom almost 2 years ago. She was 83 at the time. Mom was independent and quickly bounced back from any illness. She actually worked until a few months before her 83rd birthday. Unfortunately, she has advanced congestive heart failure and has lost most of her physical strength. I had to move in with her to provide 24 x 7 care. My siblings aren’t helping, so I’m doing this alone with no option for respite. Mom is of sound mind and will not accept an outside aide nor will she go to any external respite care center. I’m 64 years old and injured myself lifting bags, boxes, etc. so I now have groceries and goods delivered. I also hired someone to clean and take care of the laundry. It’s hard sometimes, especially when I want to do something or see other people. I had a part time remote job, but mom became too ill and I had to quit. I came here to connect with others in similar situations, which will remind me that I’m not “Alone.”

Hello, friends,

My husband was hit by a car in 2010 and sustained a traumatic brain injury. We were newlyweds at the time, with 5 teenagers in the house. We'd been together for more than 12 years when he had his accident, and if I didn't know and love him well, I don't think I could have made it through. I call myself a "supporter" rather than caregiver. I think we're all walking a hard road that none of us expected to be on. I'm happy to find pockets of other carers here and there - it's nice to meet you!

Remember that comparison is the thief of joy. Be happy for today. Be happy for the little things.

I am so sorry to hear about your husband. Sending hugs, prayers and strength to you and your family.
I actually work with several homecare agencies that can help get people up to 24/7 split shift homecare through the Medicaid Waiver Program in New York for patients with dementia, Alzheimer's, MS and TBI. My family and I obtained this program for my grandmother who has Alzheimer's and it has been a great help. That is why I got into the healthcare business. There are so many programs out there to help families cope. I wish I knew about Trualta before everything. This place has helped me to understand people with cognitive impairment better and learn how to help as much as I can.

My parents (ages 90 and 85) are in stages of dementia and alzheimers. They are more or less living independently although I manage most of their household needs.
I'm their only one of their children in Ohio, their other three offspring live elsewhere. Since I do not have children, I have taken on most of the work assisting them in their aging years.
However, I'm unable to sustain the pace. In this call I am hoping to find ways to assess their needs, and get some ideas of what options there are in Central Ohio.

I participated on one call already, but the seminar was based on laws in another state, which made it only partly useful unfortunately. I did gain some good ideas though - so am grateful for that.

Good morning everyone, my family has a situation that I hope we can go through making the best decisions. My mother is 88 with dementia and she lives with my 63 year old sister that was just diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's disease. My sister also has a 37 year old disabled son with autism. My sister has lived with my parents a long time and they helped with her son when they were younger then she helped with my parents all she could along with myself and my other two sisters. My father passed away in 2020 and now the 3 of them live there together. My nephew has a caretaker that comes and helps with him Mon-Friday for 8 hours. We are just trying to prepare for the future.

Hi Good Afternoon,
I am Josie, turned 50 this year , the youngest of 6 and I have two children.
My father died last year, he had Alzheimer's and my mother has Alzheimer's. She is 85. She tends to get angry/frustrated alot. Insists that she wants to go" home." which has resulted in several searches, when she gets lost. We are no longer her children, she still thinks we are family but maybe her sisters. Its rough. Wouldn't wish this on anyone.

Hi, I'm Pat. I am 70 yrs old, retired 10 yrs ago because my mother was needing care after my father passed away. While she lives in her own apartment, she relies on me to do her shopping, take her to appointments and handle her finances. She is now 96 yrs old and after a fall, she can no longer live alone. My sister and I placed her in a nice Assisted Living facility 3 weeks ago and she is not adjusting. She is still relying on my sister and I to do everything for her. In addition, in July 2023 my husband had a stroke which has triggered vascular dementia. He is needing close monitoring. While he can still drive, he can not manage his medications or appointments. He is extremely depressed. He had open heart surgery in March and is on a special diet, which he expects me to shop, cook and monitor for him. I am needing help, but live in a rural area where even getting a reliable cleaning person is a challenge. I look forward to seeing what others are doing to cope.

Hi I'm Robbie. My husband and I care for my MIL with Dementia. She has lived with us for a little over a year now. So many ups and downs for sure. Every day we never know what will come at us. I'm learning all I can about Vascular Dementia, because I'm pretty sure this is what she has. She may have others mixed in, but her symptoms are consistent with VD. I'm part of on online community, and feel like I have support for sure. I'm checking this forum out to see if it would be good for my husband. This journey is hardest on him. Watching and experiencing so many changes, mostly personality, is hard for him to deal with. I'm wonding how many men caregivers are on here.!! Give me a shout out men!!!

Just signed up caring for spouses and signed into this forum , providing home care services , both are 78 living in our home, mobility is limited to walker use and wheel chair, thankfully we have a home health care 5 days a week 8 to 12 am, I try to provide total care in home, hope to gain knowledge to keep her comfortable at home as long as possible,
